Woolworth Building

Address: 501 Houston Street
Year Built: 1926

This three-story concrete and limestone building is a handsome Art Deco Neoclassical Revival design by Wiley G. Clarkson, head of one of the largest architectural firms in Fort Worth from the 1920s through the 1940s. Much of the building's design was influenced by the Chicago commercial style of the period that incorporated a transition from Classical and Beaux Arts to Art Deco.

The F.W. Woolworth Company, which occupied the building from 1926 to 1990, took pride in building stores that were significant but in architectural harmony with the community.

This building is a fine example, faced with white Texas limestone and featuring sidewalk-level granite bulkheads. The horizontal frieze below the cornice and above the third-floor windows displays an attractive stylized floral motif interspersed with a floral-type medallion at each bay.

The string course below the second-story windows extends continuously around the building with a molding of classical design.
