52 Foot Blue Spruce Tree Arrives in Sundance Square

52 FOOT BLUE SPRUCE TREE ARRIVES IN SUNDANCE SQUARE
TO BE CENTERPIECE OF HOLIDAY FESTIVITIES

Sundance Square Continues Commitment to be “GREEN”

FORT WORTH, TX (Nov. 16, 2009) – The anticipation of the holidays became a little more exciting today when Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief hoisted a 52-foot blue spruce tree from a flatbed truck and placed the Christmas tree into position at the corner of Main and 3rd street in Sundance Square. The tree originates from Grand Rapids, MI and will be decorated throughout the week by Sundance Square elves.

This is not just any Christmas tree – this year’s holiday centerpiece will once again be “green”, using LED lights for the first time. Furthermore, the blue spruce’s electricity emissions from its LED lights are being 100 percent offset with approximately 18,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of pollution-free Texas wind power from Sundance Square’s energy partner, Green Mountain Energy Company. Offsetting the emissions from the tree has the same environmental impact as not driving to the North Pole and back - about 28,000 miles!

“Sundance Square is proud to continue the tradition of the Fort Worth Christmas tree for everyone to enjoy,” said Johnny Campbell, president and CEO of Sundance Square. “Sundance Square is the perfect setting for the holidays as everyone comes together to celebrate the joy of the season. For children of all ages, Sundance Square becomes a magical destination during the holidays.”

PARADE OF LIGHTS

Sundance Square will kick off the holiday season with the 27th annual Chesapeake Energy Parade of Lights presented by Chase in Sundance Square starting at 6 pm. The parade is themed “Holiday Dreams, Holiday Wishes” and will feature illuminated floats, marching bands and other performers to herald the holiday season. The parade begins at Throckmorton and Belknap Street, and winds through downtown Sundance Square and downtown Fort Worth.

As the parade draws to a close, the lights on the Christmas Tree in Sundance Square will come to life with a tree-lighting ceremony at 7:35 p.m. featuring Santa Claus. After Santa helps light the tree, he will visit with children and take pictures until 10 pm. Holiday keepsake photos with Santa are only $7 each with the funds benefiting a scholarship fund established by the Fort Worth Sister Cities.

HOLIDAY EVENTS

Throughout the holidays, there are many more events and activities to be found at Sundance Square.

The 18th Annual Jingle Bell Run for Arthritis is slated for Saturday, December 5. The jingle bell action gets underway with the 1-Mile Reindeer Run at 4:00 p.m. followed by the 5K Certified Night Run/Walk at 5 p.m.

Join Sundance Square for the Cowboy Santas Toy Drive on Thursday, December 10 from 5 am to 8 am. Stop by and drop off a new, unwrapped toy or monetary donations. On December 17, there is another opportunity to donate a new, unwrapped toy for Cowboys Santas between 5-9 pm. CBS 11 and sister station TXA 21 will broadcast live weather segments from Sundance Square during the event.
