
DeVry University to Host Voter Registration Drive at Fort Worth Location
“DeVry Votes” Goal is to register 8,000 New Voters Across the Country" FORT WORTH, TX – September 12, 2008 – DeVry University is set to host DeVry Votes, a voter registration drive at their Fort Worth Center location to encourage more Americans to register and turn out to vote in the upcoming election. From September 15 to September 19, DeVry faculty, staff and students will register new voters as part of a goal to add 8,000 citizens nationwide to the voter rolls. “DeVry University has always been committed to education, as well as civic and community involvement,” said Alicia Hejduk, DeVry’s Ft. Worth center dean. “In recent years, voter turn out nationally has been low, and as an institution of learning, we want to provide the opportunity for our students and others in the community to take part in one of the most important responsibilities we have as U.S. citizens.” About 36 percent of the voting eligible population did not register or vote in the 2004 presidential election, according to a report from the U.S. Census Bureau. The report also stated that out of the 197 million eligible voters, only 142 million were registered in 2004. The bureau also found that voter turn out directly correlated with a person’s level of education and age. People between the ages of 65 and 74 had over 73 percent voter turn out compared to those between the ages of 18 and 24 that had the lowest turn out with 47 percent. Voters with a high school diploma, no diploma or its equivalent voted at a lower rate than those with a bachelor’s or more advanced degree.
